Todays Harvest

I am so proud of my turnips !! I've never grown them before and since I thinned them out and transplanted the ones I pulled up, these have suddenly grown. I was amazed to see the size of them.

All in all despite the rain I am having some good harvests (when I can get up there in-between showers!) The 'Tayberries' from Victoriana Nursery have been brilliant this year. They are thornless which makes for easy and safe picking. Which is more than I can say for the gooseberries and blackberries which have huge thorns.

The courgette that has turned into a marrow is from my daughters plot. Every year I grow her plants and hers always do better than mine ( so annoying !) and she never gets around to harvesting them before they become too big. I like mine small or medium sized.

There is so much to do up on the plot as the rain has made everything grow so much.  The grass and edges need doing, the box hedge needs it's first trim and weeds are rampant.  Basically it looks a mess, and I can't do anything about it until we have some decent weather. (if ever !!) sometimes I feel so despondent that I feel like giving up as it's so much work when it isn't done on a regular basis, especially with a fairly big garden as well.

I'm sure we all go through these feelings and when the sun shines again I will probably love it all again.  Anyway here is the photo of the harvest and also the lovely Lavender I picked to dry out in the airing cupboard.  I have a good stash now to put into the fabric hearts I make and sell.  Growing my own saves me quite a bit of money as buying dried lavender is very expensive.

I hope you are having some successful harvests and aren't feeling too depressed with this terrible summer of ours.

Hi enrico, I hope you enjoy your courgettes. I put mine in a pasta dish this evening along with bacon, chicken, peppers, onions and tomatoes and of course herbs and garlic. It was delicious. I do wish the rain would stop. Are you growing tomatoes ? I must pop over to your blog now to have a look at what you are up to.

You have a wonderful harvest Maureen. Congratulations that you have achieved all this despite the constant rain. So take heart. Hope you have some wonderful gardening weather very soon.

We are picking raspberries, although they are not as prolific as in past years. We also have mange tout and a few broad beans, but our courgettes are tiny! A fox had an argument with a pigeon amongst our onions, and squashed some of them! We have started picking our tomatoes though, and have already eaten 6, yes 6, cucumbers - mad isn't it!!!

Picked my first few cherry tomatoes from our tiny patio garden yesterday. Very exciting but most things are turning to seed very quickly. Perhaps they don't like the rain either!

Hi Jean, thanks for the comment. It's still raining ! In fact torrential today, so no gardening or harvesting until its a bit sunnier and dry.

Hi Chris , I hope your onions weren't too damaged by the fight . Six cucumbers is pretty impressive. I have lots of flowers on my cucumber plants in the greenhouse but not had anything to harvest yet.

Hi Minimbah Mmmm cherry tomatoes ! Lovely ! I have lots of flowers on the tomato plants but again no pickings yet , just waiting patiently for both tomatoes and cucumbers. I just wish this horrid weather would cease and we could have a proper summer.

The weather is getting everyone down, Maureen, but I think it will change soon. Your turnips are very pretty and photograph well against the dark courgettes. At least you're getting some kind of harvest from your garden, I've had broad beans, raspberries and potatoes so not a particularly good year!
