Lovely Broad Beans

At last the Broad Beans are up and raring to go, well some of them anyway and the others are just starting to nudge the compost ready to pop out.  I look up my old posts on Broad Beans and on March 3rd 2009 the plants were much bigger than these ones that are now growing.  It's always exciting when the seedlings appear. I have also sown chillies ( a few varieties) red and white onions, peppers, and some flowers for my cutting bed, oh and some Lemon basil and sweet basil.

I feel that I'm a bit behind this year, but I have been busy doing lots of craft projects and the weather hasn't exactly been inspiring, but I think I am on my way now. Here's a peek at the Broad Beans (photo's taken today.

Those broad beans are further on than mine - but my sweet peas, perpetual spinach and the very first of my purple podded mangetout are coming through so I shouldn't complain. I think the beans will be another week or so before really shoving through the compost.

Hi Vegetable Heaven, thanks for popping by. Purple podded mangetout sounds interesting ! who sells them ? as I haven't seen them around and I love mangetout. I haven't sown my sweet peas yet, must do that today so thanks for reminding me.

My own home-bred Maureen. In a couple of years I hope to have them true breeding and then you will be welcome to some!

I will look forward to that. Thanks for the reply.

I tried to over winter broad beans in the (unheated) greenhouse this year and they all keeled over. The ones I sowed a couple of weeks ago are just starting to poke their heads up, but are definitely behind yours. Tomorrow I get to sow tomatoes, so am rather excited!

Glad to hear that you have sown some chillis, Maureen - my favourites!
I have deliberately not sown my Broad Beans yet. This year I'm trying to be a bit more patient, waiting for the weather to warm up a bit before I put too many seeds in.

Isn't it wonderful to see things starting to grow again. Bliss.

PLANTALISCIOUS, I'm not sure if you can overwinter broad beans in a greenhouse, I know that they can be sown in the ground during late Autumn as some plot holders on our allotment have done this very successfully. I sowed about five different tomatoes today,so we will have to compare growth.

MARK, I wish I had your patience ! I just had to sow those broad beans a few weeks ago and I sowed the tomatoes today and more chilli seeds that I found lurking in the seed box.

PAM yes it's very exciting to get going for a new year on the allotment. I have almost used up all of the onions from last year, so I will have to start buying some soon.

Dear Maureen, We are still covered with snow here, so it is especially nice to see how your spring garden is progressing. Unfortunately, patience is not one of my virtues. Well done with the beans. Pamela x

Hi PAMELA, I hope you are well and that your snow soon goes away and Spring arrives as I know you must be itching to get going.
