HAPPY NEW YEAR

I hope the New Year brings you all good health, happiness, Peace and an allotment full of lovely vegetables.

We went up to the allotment today for the first time in many weeks. Our visit was just to take bags of kitchen waste to the compost bins, whilst there I had a look around and saw that the garlic looked strong and healthy and the cabbages were looking small but pretty good too. The brussel sprouts had sprouted some more tiny ones at the top of the stems, so we may get some late ones after all. The sprouts at the bottom were horrid and not worth picking. The purple sprouting broccoli looks sturdy and healthy, so we are hoping for some nice pickings in the spring.

Speaking of Spring ! today was just like a chilly spring day with light clouds and some blue sky, and have you noticed how it's staying lighter for longer in the evening ? I can't wait for the better weather and after going to the allotment today I'm eager to get started on tidying up and adding the manure we got late last year onto the beds. My rasperry canes need cutting back and topping with manure too.
Have a good week.

Hi Maureen; Happy New Year! I like your new blog header photo. Especially since it has some Red-veined sorrel in it - which you don't see very often (which is a shame since it is so beautiful).

Happy New Year to you too! I have a feeling 2011 is going to a very busy and productive year. Are you going to the potato day at Whitchurch at the end of the month? And I must check my Dahlia tubers to make sure they're OK, I was going to send you some of the Atika variety, I'll have a look, been neglecting my jobs recently! Best wishes.

Hi MARK, I hope this year is good for you and the family. I love the red veined sorrel too but I think I may have lost it. I took a look at it yesterday and it is all shrivelled up. Fingers crossed it may send up new shoots when the weather warms up. I bought it for the first time last year so don't know how hardy it is.

Hi DAMO, Last year was a very busy one for you, I seem to remember that your harvests were amazing as were your flowers, so I can't imagine you being busier this year, you will have to retire very early !!!! I will be sending some Pink Giraffe to you a bit later on.
I am possibly going to the Whitchurch Potato day,so if I do I'll let you know. All the best for 2011.

Hi PROSPERO, thank you for your confidence in my growing ability, I hope I don't let you down ! if you didn't live so very far away I would share some with you. Have a wonderful 2011.

Great post as always Maureen. Haven't made it up to the plot yet (tomorrow, fingers crossed) but have sorted through the seeds and am planning out each bed. Our sprouts have been dire this year but the leeks are great.
Wish we'd planted some purple sb though.

Thanks PAM, I envy you your leeks, mine got leek moth again last year even though I grew them under fleece, so I'm not sure I will bother again. This year I want to grow things that are hardy and simple. I don't want to be a slave to the plot, which has happened in the past. M x

A belated Happy New Year to you Maureen :) Hope that it treats you and the allotment kindly. I can't wait to get going again. It sounds as if your volunteering experience surpassed your expectations and was not only memorable but rewarding too.
